Selling to the World Initiative is an entrepreneurial economic development program. The program was created by three partners in eastern Kentucky. The partners include the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (Middlesboro Campus), Discover Downtown Middlesboro (Main Street Association), and Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP). The three partners designed the program to target local eastern Kentucky artisans and craftspeople whose products are the type and quality that could support a business. The Selling to the World Initiative recruit’s participants who wanted to launch or expand a small business utilizing the internet to market, sell and ship products. The Initiative objective is to boost the region’s economy by increasing exports and growing businesses to create dependent jobs.

The goal of Selling to the World Initiative is to provide personalized one-on-one mentoring and workshops that equip creative people and startup businesses. Essentially providing the knowledge and skills to start businesses utilizing the internet and earn supplemental income through their products or business concept with the potential of growing businesses to create jobs.

The Selling to the World Initiative curriculum has six areas of focus to provide the knowledge and skills to start or expand businesses utilizing the internet. The six areas are as follows:

  • Knowing Yourself: Becoming an Entrepreneur
  • Planning for Now and the Future: Strategies for Growth
  • Getting the Relationship: Building and Marketing a Brand
  • Knowing Your Customer: Photo and Video Creation
  • Accounting for Growth: Pricing and Policies
  • Selling Platforms: Utilizing the World Wide Web

Selling to the World Initiative is the host of an annual Expo held at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, Middlesboro campus. The day-long Expo is open to the public. Attendees choose which sessions will be most beneficial for them to attend. Keynote speakers and presenters, such as Appalachia Wholesale, Kentucky Proud, Kentucky World Trade Center and Kentucky Workforce Innovation to name a few, cover topics ranging from website development and social media marketing to retail vs wholesale, shipping and product regulations. The Expo also includes additional breakout sessions, exhibitors fair and serves as a recruiting and promotional tool.
