NCWE Board Diversity Statement

The National Council for Workforce Education
Statement from the Board of Directors

As a workforce focused, nonprofit committed to equity and inclusion, the NCWE Board of Directors is saddened and distressed by the senseless killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many other Black Americans. We stand with and support the anger of our Black colleagues and friends in that their lives and the lives of their family members continue to be undervalued and treated with lack of regard. These deaths, and the sometime violent responses to protestors of color, have proven that we no longer can ignore the impact of racism and racial disparity. We must come together not only to have the difficult conversations about racism and its impact on Black lives, but also commit our personal and professional selves to take positive action.

For over five years, NCWE has included a strand in our conference on equity and inclusion in workforce education. We have long recognized our role in serving diverse populations. Our equity strand specifically asks for workshop proposals focused on the mission-centric values of equity, diversity, and inclusivity in workforce education and training. These past couple of weeks have proven that it has not enough. It is clear that we have not done enough, nor have our voices been loud enough. We need to do better.

The NCWE Board of Directors wants you to know that we will continue our efforts to support practices and policies that ensure "workforce education for all." We will continue to advocate for policy and practices that protect the lives of Black Americans and expand equity in education and economic opportunity. And we will continue to ensure that our Board of Directors reflects and represents the diversity of our communities.

We encourage you to speak out against racism. Listen and learn from your Black colleagues and friends. Be an ally. Work together to find a way forward to a more equitable and just workforce education future.
