NCWE Advocacy Activities and Accomplishments
Share |
In recent years, NCWE has worked with coalitions such as the Campaign to Invest in America’s Workforce on several coalition letters to members of the House and Senate.
Action Requested Result
Reauthorize Perkins Act

Bill passed House but not Senate in 2016
Requested that it be re-introduced in 2017

Reauthorize the Workforce Investment Act,
now knows as the Workforce Innovation and
Opportunity Act

Signed into legislation in 2014
Since 2015, NCWE and the National Skills Coalition (NSC) have promoted the idea of extending Pell grants to short-term job training programs. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) have again introduced legislation called the Jumpstarting our Businesses by Supporting Students (JOBS) Act. NCWE issued an action alert, encouraging members to ask their elected officials to be co-sponsors.

In 2013, NCWE participated, with the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) and other organizations, in the Reimagining Aid Design and Delivery project, to make recommendations for improving the financial aid system. Some recommendations, such as providing more comprehensive, consistent information about college costs, were adopted by the Obama administration.

NCWE often features governmental speakers at the annual conference. For example, in 2014, there was a mega-session on the differences between WIA and WIOA. The 2017 conference will have an expert panel on what to expect in workforce education policy from the Trump administration.
