Information About Opportunities to Participate in the Initiative

Jobs for the Future and the National Council for Workforce Education are seeking qualified community and technical colleges to participate in the Breaking Through Initiative. This multi-year initiative, funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, seeks to connect low-skilled adults to occupational and technical degree programs in community/technical colleges.

What institutions or programs qualify to participate?

A community or technical college (either an individual college or a local system) in the U.S.

A partnership led by a community or technical college that includes other providers in the community critical to creating paths into college programs for low-skilled adults.

What are the participation opportunities for colleges?

  • Six to eight colleges with demonstrated capacity will receive grants of $50,000 for the first year and $100,000 in the second and third years, for a total of $250,000 each.
  • Ten to fifteen colleges that have begun connecting low-skilled adults to occupational/technical degree programs will benefit from peer learning and technical assistance. Funds will be awarded to cover the expenses for two people from the institution to attend peer learning sessions hosted by Jobs for the Future and the National Council for Workforce Education.
  • All registrants that receive information will be notified about upcoming events and opportunities to participate in other projects.

How do I apply to participate?

Jobs for the Future and the National Council for Workforce Education will issue a Request for Proposals in June 2005.

Online registration and the RFP will be available on the JFF and NCWE Web sites.
