NCWE Voted 8th Highest Performing Workforce Development
Nonprofit by National Nonprofit Organization

Philanthropedia surveyed 103 workforce development experts with an average of 17 years of experience in the field to identify nonprofits that were the highest performing on a national level. Experts were asked to recommend up to four nonprofits and up to two promising start-up nonprofits, and were asked to comment on each nonprofit's impact, other organizational strengths, and how each organization could further improve. 181 organizations were considered with the experts identifying the 16 top nonprofits. NCWE is proud to have been chosen as the 8th highest performing workforce development nonprofit.

Also rated in the top 16 were our colleagues at National Skills Coalition, The Aspen Institute, Center for Law and Social Policy, Jobs for the Future, Jewish Vocational Service, Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, Corporation for a Skilled Workforce, and National Council of La Raza.


Programme for International Student Assessment Releases
First Study of Adult Skills

A decade after the publication of results from the first round of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), its seminal assessment of the knowledge and skills of 15-year-olds, the OECD has conducted its first Survey of Adult Skills (PIACC), which extends the assessment of skills to the entire adult population. The survey, a product of the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), focuses on skills – literacy, numeracy and problem solving – similar to those assessed in PISA; but the two studies use different assessment tasks, reflecting the different contexts in which 15-year-old students and older adults live.

College for America Workforce Strategy Report: Healthcare

Changing Nonclinical and Frontline Healthcare Jobs Have Major Implications for Employers, Finds New Workforce Strategy Report by College for America. Frontline and nonclinical health care jobs like medical assistants and patient navigators are growing dramatically in number and complexity in the wake of the baby boom retirement, Affordable Care Act, and information technology advances, according to a new workforce strategy report released today by College for America, a national leader in competency-based higher education. The report explores the surge already underway in six non-clinical healthcare positions: Medical Office Specialist; Medical Assistant; Office Supervisor; Community Health Worker; Medical Records Technician; Patient Representative. More important for employers and workforce developers, the report explores the shifting skill sets required for these jobs.

NCWE, JFF and AIHEC Release Report on Breaking Through and TCUs

Building the Foundation for Success: Case Studies of Breaking Through Tribal Colleges and Universities highlights the findings from a Breaking Through partnership facilitated by Jobs for the Future, the National Council for Workforce Education, and the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. This eighteen-month initiative focused on piloting workforce and education strategies to better serve low-skilled students at tribal colleges and universities. Six institutions participated—Comanche Nation College, Leech Lake Tribal College, Little Big Horn College, Northwest Indian College, Salish Kootenai College, and Sitting Bull College—with each establishing two or more cohorts of GED or workforce students and incorporating the four Breaking Through core strategies. As a result of experimenting with the implementation of Breaking Through in a tribal college context, a number of key themes emerged.
